Stefano Unterthiner. A Window on the Arctic
The exhibition A Window on the Arctic presents the work of wildlife photographer Stefano Unterthiner, created between 2018 and 2025 in the Svalbard Archipelago, the northernmost inhabited land on the planet. The exhibition features photographs taken during the project A Family in the Arctic – collected in the book Un mondo diverso (Ylaios, 2022) – together with new, previously unpublished work produced during four subsequent expeditions. In total, sixty photographs are displayed across nine thematic sections portraying the Arctic and its wildlife through the changing seasons. The exhibition offers an intense and emotional journey through this extraordinary northern region, presenting a vivid and powerful portrait of a fragile world, rapidly changing and increasingly affected by the impact of climate change.
The exhibition also includes eighteen black-and-white portraits taken by Unterthiner among the residents of the small community of Longyearbyen, accompanied by personal testimonies on the perception of climate change, a large-format panel dedicated to the climate stripes and a documentary produced by Italy’s Raitre channel, recounting the A Family in the Arctic project.
An internationally renowned photographer, naturalist and communicator, Stefano Unterthiner is the author of ten photographic books and has been a contributor to National Geographic for over twenty years. His images are published and exhibited worldwide.
