ON THE SETS OF AVENGERS Age of Ultron
Any season is the right one to visit the places that hosted the sets of the Marvel blockbuster, Avengers: Age of Ultron.
All the Italian filming locations for Avengers: Age of Ultron, the 2015 blockbuster starring Marvel’s Avengers, are located in the Aosta Valley. Fort Bard, an imposing fortress built in the 19th century by the Savoy family and now home to museums and exhibitions, hosted some of the filming, becoming one of the film’s iconic landmarks.
Fort Bard is the headquarters of Hydra, Shield’s archenemy, and where Baron Von Strucker can count on the collaboration of the super-powered twins Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. It’s the villains’ castle where Ultron perfects his plan to destroy the planet.
As a reminder of the filming that took place in February 2014, 1:1 scale models of Iron Man, Hulk, and Captain America are placed at the landing of the third panoramic elevator.
To guide Marvel superhero fans to the locations where some of the blockbuster’s scenes were filmed, signage totems featuring the film’s protagonists have been placed. Each totem features a complete list of locations and a QR code that allows access to special video content.
WHAT TO SEE
Explore the historic centers of the Aosta Valley towns that have been transformed into the fictional Eastern European city of Sokovia. In Bard, you can enter the majestic Fort that was chosen as the headquarters of Hydra, Shield’s archenemy, where Baron Von Strucker was able to count on the collaboration of the super-powered twins Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. It’s the villains’ castle where Ultron perfects his plan to destroy the planet. Filming primarily focused on the pedestrian road that climbs up the north side of the fortress.
There are many attractions in the other locations: in Donnas, you can retrace the Roman Road of Gaul, carved into the rock and overlooked by its characteristic arch, and the medieval village that preserves buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries.
In Pont-Saint-Martin, the Roman Bridge over the Lys River, which dominates the city center, is worth a visit. In Verrès, the splendid medieval village is overlooked by the Collegiate Church of Saint-Gilles, which actor Jeremy Renner looks out from in the film.
The railway tunnel seen at the beginning of the film is visible from Via Stazione in Hône and passes under Fort Bard. The Roman remains that appear in many battle scenes in Sokovia are the Roman walls of the city of Aosta.
The sets of Avengers: Age of Ultron await you in the Aosta Valley.
SCENES E LOCATIONS AT THE FORT
In the movie Avengers Age of Ultron, the iron gate separating the landing of the first panoramic elevator and the ascent towards the Opera Ferdinando is easily recognizable.
The scene where Iron Man lands on the pavement of the street is set between the Opera Mortai and the Opera Ferdinando.
Continuing along the pedestrian path north of the fortress you reach the panoramic point where some anti-aircraft scenes were filmed, at the height of the area leading to the Stables of the Fort.
The now famous scene in the trailers showing Iron Man on the hills around the Fort was filmed near the village of Albard di Bard (climbed by car from the main town of Donnas).
