Beyond the Shot: ethics in wildlife photography
Gran Paradiso National Park and Fort Bard will open the exhibition Beyond the Shot on Saturday, September 27 at 11:00 a.m. Created in partnership by the two institutions, the project aims to encourage reflection on the ethics of wildlife photography and, more broadly, on the importance of a respectful approach to the Alpine environment.
Hosted in the Scuderie, the Fort’s historic stables, the exhibition takes visitors beyond the purely aesthetic value of images, inviting them to consider what happens before, during, and after taking a photograph. Beyond the Shot encourages the public to reflect on how our actions affect wildlife, highlighting the importance of responsible behaviour.
The exhibition features over 20 large and medium format photographs, a storytelling section illustrating the consequences of seemingly harmless human actions, and two educational panels – one of them interactive – exploring the most vulnerable months for certain mountain species and the intricate interconnections between flora and fauna in the Alpine ecosystem. The experience ends with two video projections, one of which is specifically designed to help viewers reconnect with nature and restore their sense of balance within it.
Through its images, multimedia installations and interactive panels, the exhibition offers an in-depth exploration of the Alpine ecosystem, its delicate balance, and the connections between plants, animals, and humans. Beyond the Shot is therefore a journey of awareness, encouraging visitors to recognise their place within this ecological network and to understand how every gesture, every choice, and every shot leaves a mark.
The exhibition will be open until December 8.
