Masterpiece at the Fort. Caravaggio, Saint John the Baptist
Soon : 14/01/2026 – 06/04/2026
To mark the 20th anniversary of the Fort of Bard, the three-year project Masterpiece at the Fort begins. Until 2028, a major masterpiece of Italian art will be showcased each year inside the former Military Chapel. The project aims to highlight unique works that reflect the genius of Italian masters, as well as exceptional stories and iconography.
The first masterpiece is by Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio. It is one of his final works: Saint John the Baptist. The painting reveals the artist’s maturity and emotional depth. This depiction of Saint John was meant to represent his redemption, but instead accompanied him on his final journey toward an untimely death
